External Awareness – Pavement

Motorcycle Skills focused on working smoothly with your motorcycle—what we call Fluid Execution. This means understanding motorcycle controls and physics to move as one with the bike. Fluid Execution does not end at the handlebars, it extends into the pavement and surroundings.

The Roadway Skills course is about how the motorcycle connects to the road and how to move through the environment. We will be discussing these topics:

  1. Basic Ride Plans
  2. Lane Position
  3. Passable Hazards
  4. Turns & Hills
  5. Alternative Riding Surfaces

While learning Roadway Skills, the rider will encounter Passable Hazards that can be classified into four groups:

Road Hazards – Curves or changes in the road surface.
Hazards on the Road – Debris or other foreign objects on the pavement.
Traction Hazards – Things that reduce grip, like oil or gravel.
Stability Hazards – Things that disrupt balance, like potholes or uneven pavement.

Our first order of business is to take a closer look at pavement.
