Passable Hazard Hotspots
While travelling through certain environments, the likelihood of encountering Passable Hazards will drastically increase. The motorcyclist should be on high alert when riding through the following areas.
Construction Zones
Wherever road work has recently been completed (freshly constructed pavement can still have gravel and oil about), or is still in progress, it will always contain unfavourable conditions. Be on the lookout for: gravel/sand, uneven/stripped pavement, traffic flow changes/disruption, oil, equipment and workers.
Degraded Pavement Sections
The state of a road preceding pavement removal and road resurfacing can be very hazardous to the motorcyclist. In some circumstances, the road can quite literally be falling apart. Old pavement sections can develop severe Stability Hazards with high frequency. Spot risky pavement sections from a distance by their faded colour and patchy look. Be on the lookout for: loose chips, excessive Tarsnakes/cracks, pavement separation, heaves, and potholes. Stability Hazard concentration will typically be between pavement strips and around vehicles tracks.
Industrial Areas
Full of warehouses and gravel equipment yards, these areas will be travelled by large amounts of commercial vehicles. The large heavy trucks will result in faster than normal pavement degradation, will more commonly have oil leaks, as well as, carry in dirt/sand if they service or park in unpaved areas. Be on the lookout for: sand, dirt, gravel, oil, and pavement degradation.
Bridges
The Transition Zone onto and off of a bridge will generally have a bump, unevenness, or crack. The bridge surface will commonly be rougher and will not get resurfaced as often as regular roadways. In areas with colder climates, air underneath a bridge can often be cooler than the air above. this can lead to Traction Hazards upon the driving surface. Condensation resulting from air temperature differences above/below the bridge can create Hazard Stacks when combined with metal or wood surfaced bridges.
Gravel Road Transitions
The point where paved roads turn to gravel, or where gravel roads join paved roads perpendicularly, will have Stability Hazards from vehicle weight settling onto the new gravel surface and vehicles will carry sand, dirt, and gravel onto the pavement.
Bus Lanes
Buses are heavy and generally travel curb-side to do pick-ups and drop-offs. Expect a high level of pavement degradation, worsening as you near the curb.
Intersections
Intersections are one of the most common areas to find sand/gravel and are a common place for pavement sections to change. Traffic travelling in alternate directions can create washboard effects, especially in high traffic or industrial areas.
